The M1841 Mississippi rifle is a muzzle-loading percussion rifle used in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, and it was the first standard United States military rifle to use a percussion lock system, an improvement over earlier flintlock designs so effective that many older firearms were converted to it. It was made by the Harper's Ferry Armory and E. Whitney from 1841 to 1861, originally in .54 caliber before an 1855 modification to .58 caliber that could also fire the .58 Minie ball, weighing about 9 pounds 4 ounces with a 33 inch barrel and an effective range of about 1,100 yards. It also saw earlier service in the Seminole Wars. This description is adapted from Wikipedia contributors under CC BY-SA 4.0; changes were made. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
