The American Civil War (1861 to 1865) was fought between the Union and eleven Southern states that seceded to form the Confederate States of America. It began when Confederate forces opened fire on the Union-held Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, and ended with the Union victorious, the Confederacy dissolved and slavery abolished, freeing four million African Americans.
