The Maynard carbine was an American breech-loading cavalry carbine designed in 1851 by the dentist Edward Maynard and built by the Massachusetts Arms Company, with initial 1858-59 production largely bought by Southern states that would form the Confederacy and a later 1863 model mass-produced chiefly for Union cavalry during the American Civil War. Chambered in .50, .52 or .35 caliber and loaded through a breech-loading lever action, it measured 40 inches overall with a 21.5 inch barrel, fired about 12 rounds per minute to a maximum range of 600 yards, and more than 21,000 were built between 1860 and 1869, with limited numbers also reaching Argentina.
