Astra 400

The Astra Modelo 400 is a Spanish service pistol produced by the manufacturer Astra-Unceta y Cia as a replacement for the earlier Campo-Giro 1913/1916, also chambered in 9mm Largo. It became the standard sidearm of the Spanish Army during the Spanish Civil War and also saw service with Germany during the Second World War. It was mass-produced and remains a common survivor today; the Spanish Navy, the German Luftwaffe, and the Chilean Navy mainly used the smaller Astra 300 variant, and the Wehrmacht later adapted the 400 into the Astra 600 to better handle the 9mm Luger cartridge. Considered a heavy pistol because its blowback action needed a reinforced slide and a tough spring to handle the powerful 9mm Largo round, it earned a reputation among Spanish African and Civil War veterans as strong and reliable, especially under muddy or sandy conditions, since its internal hammer stayed protected from dirt and debris.
