Type 97 sniper rifle

The Type 97 sniper rifle is a Japanese bolt-action rifle adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1937 after combat experience in Manchuria showed a need for a purpose-built sniper weapon, essentially a modified Type 38 rifle fitted with a 2.5x telescopic sight. Built at the Nagoya and Kokura arsenals between 1938 and 1943, about 22,500 to 23,500 were made, chambered for the 6.5x50mm Arisaka cartridge. Although the later Type 99 sniper rifle was meant to replace it, the Type 97 stayed in front-line use throughout the Second World War, in the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Pacific theater and the Chinese Civil War, valued by many Japanese snipers for its light recoil and close-range accuracy in jungle fighting.
