The Springfield Armory M1A is a semi-automatic rifle based on the M14 rifle, made for the civilian and law enforcement markets in the United States by Springfield Armory, Inc. beginning in 1971, with M1A a proprietary name for the company's M14-pattern rifle. Early M1A rifles were assembled from surplus government-issue parts before Springfield Armory began manufacturing its own, and production moved from Devine, Texas to Geneseo, Illinois in 1974 after Robert Reese purchased the company from Elmer Ballance.
