Volkssturmgewehr

The Volkssturmgewehr was a family of simplified semi automatic rifles built by Nazi Germany in the final months of the Second World War to arm the Volkssturm militia, under the Primitiv Waffen Programm begun on 18 October 1944. The designs, submitted by firms including Walther, Spreewerk, Rheinmetall, Mauser, Steyr and Gustloff, were engineered for production with minimal materials and industrial capacity. The best known variant, the Gustloff design, used gas delayed blowback operation and fired the 7.92x33mm Kurz cartridge, with about 10,000 built between January and May 1945.
