Berthier rifle

The Berthier is a French bolt-action rifle and carbine family designed by Andre Virgile Paul Marie Berthier to address the shortcomings of the earlier Lebel rifle, particularly for mounted troops. Its defining feature was a three-round Mannlicher-style en-bloc clip that loaded far faster than the Lebel tube magazine; cavalry carbines entered service in 1890 and full-length rifles followed from 1902 to 1907. Over two million were produced across French and allied forces from the 1890s through the Second World War, with the five-round Model 1916 becoming its most widely used variant.
