The Hotchkiss Type Universal is a French submachine gun made after the Second World War, with a design date of 1949 given in the source. Hotchkiss et Cie originally designed it as a semi-automatic police carbine, and a fully automatic version was made as well. It is chambered for the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge, works by blowback while firing from a closed bolt, and feeds from a box magazine holding 30 or 32 rounds. Its most notable feature is that it folds into a very compact package and unfolds easily and relatively quickly. The semi-automatic version was exported in very limited numbers to many countries, and many were also exported to Venezuela and Morocco. In France it was used by police, and foreign legionnaires in Indochina were issued examples for field testing.
