Ammunition and Cartridges

This group collects the Small Arms And Sidearms subcategory's cartridges and ammunition entries: named pistol, rifle and revolver cartridges fielded alongside the firearms that chamber them, from black-powder-era rounds through modern intermediate rifle cartridges such as 5.56x45mm NATO and pistol rounds such as 9x19mm Parabellum. These are ammunition specifications rather than the firearms themselves, catalogued here because the atlas's weapon-system type covers a fielded round as its own attested subject alongside the guns that fire it. Grouping them separately from the firearm type groups keeps a cartridge from being mixed into a rifle or pistol subtype group it does not itself belong to, even where its own name closely echoes the weapon family it was designed for.
