The MAS 1873 was the first double-action revolver issued to the French Army, produced at the Manufacture d'armes de Saint-Etienne from 1873 to 1887 in about 337,000 units and chambered in 11mm. It remained in French service well past its official 1892 replacement, saw extensive use in the First World War and was still being issued to reserve units in 1940, and its design influenced revolvers adopted in Belgium, Italy and Switzerland; the French Resistance relied on surviving examples during the German occupation.
