The Smith & Wesson Model 586 is an American double-action revolver introduced in 1981, holding six or seven rounds and chambered for .357 Magnum, which also chambers and fires .38 Special. Built on Smith & Wesson heavier L-frame at the urging of company historian Roy Jinks, who judged the lighter K-frame guns unsuited to sustained full-power .357 use, it was made in blued or nickel carbon steel finishes, discontinued in 1999, and reintroduced in 2012 as part of the Smith & Wesson Classic line.
