IWI Galil

The IWI Galil is a family of Israeli automatic rifles chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges, designed by Yisrael Galili and Yakov Lior in the late 1960s and drawing heavily on the Finnish RK 62, itself derived from the AK-47. Originally produced by the state owned Israel Military Industries from 1972, the rifle was issued to the Israeli Army in three configurations, the ARM, the AR and the SAR, and has since been manufactured under license by producers around the world. A modernized redesign called the Galil ACE has been made since 2008.     Built around a gas-operated rotating-bolt action derived from the Soviet Kalashnikov system but reworked with a Western-style safety and sights, the Galil is chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO or, in some variants, the larger 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge, fires at a rate of about 650 rounds per minute and reaches muzzle velocities of roughly 900 to 950 meters per second depending on variant, with different configurations built for standard infantry, automatic-rifle and short-carbine roles.
