The IWI Galil is a family of Israeli automatic rifles chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges, designed by Yisrael Galili and Yakov Lior in the late 1960s and drawing heavily on the Finnish RK 62, itself derived from the AK-47. Originally produced by the state owned Israel Military Industries from 1972, the rifle was issued to the Israeli Army in three configurations, the ARM, the AR and the SAR, and has since been manufactured under license by producers around the world. A modernized redesign called the Galil ACE has been made since 2008.
