Standing forces founded from 1775 through 1944, before this atlas own Contemporary split begins: national armies raised on a conscript or volunteer-national model, from the Napoleonic-era armies through the Confederate States Army and the German Empire twentieth-century mass forces. Belongs here: a nineteenth or twentieth century national or federal armed force founded through 1944. Does not belong here: a force founded in 1945 or later, which belongs to Contemporary instead, and a force whose named nation-state came into being only through a founding this atlas has not yet described.
