The Crimean War (1853 to 1856) pitted the Russian Empire against an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, the French Empire, the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Sardinia, fought largely on the Crimean Peninsula. It is remembered for the prolonged Siege of Sevastopol, the Charge of the Light Brigade and Florence Nightingale's nursing reforms, which followed from the war's notoriously poor medical care. Estimates for total deaths, overwhelmingly from disease rather than combat, range from under 500,000 to roughly 750,000 or more across all combatant armies, and figures are not agreed among historians.
