The Anglo-Dutch Wars were a series of four separately dated conflicts fought between the Dutch Republic and the states of England and Great Britain between 1652 and 1784: the First (1652-1654), Second (1665-1667) and Third (1672-1674) wars arose from Anglo-Dutch tensions over trade and colonial expansion in the second half of the 17th century, while the Fourth (1780-1784) was fought a century later. England won the first war and Britain won the fourth decisively, while the Dutch won the second and third; the fourth war exposed Dutch weakness and was followed by the loss of most Dutch colonial territory in subsequent conflicts.
