The Angolan War of Independence was fought from 4 February 1961 to 25 April 1974 between Portugal and three rival Angolan nationalist movements, the MPLA, the FNLA and UNITA, seeking to end Portuguese colonial rule. The conflict grew out of resentment at Portuguese colonial policy, including enforced cotton cultivation, and out of competition among the nationalist movements themselves for dominance inside Portugals African province. It ended after a bloodless coup in Lisbon in April 1974 toppled Portugals authoritarian regime; the new Portuguese government halted military operations and committed to rapid decolonization, leading to the Alvor Agreement and Angolan independence.
