Byzantine-Ottoman Wars

Medieval

The Byzantine-Ottoman wars were a series of conflicts, beginning in 1299, between the Byzantine Greeks and the rising Ottoman Turks and their allies that culminated in the destruction of the Byzantine Empire. Already weakened by the earlier Fourth Crusade, the Byzantines under the Palaiologos dynasty never fully recovered and suffered a lengthening series of defeats at Ottoman hands, at times supported by the Republic of Genoa, the Republic of Venice, the Kingdom of Sicily, the Empire of Trebizond and other Christian powers. The wars ended with the Ottoman capture of Constantinople in 1453, formally destroying the Byzantine Empire, though several Byzantine holdouts survived until 1479.
