Dutch Gold Coast Expedition of 1869-1870

The Dutch Gold Coast expedition of 1869 to 1870 was fought between the Netherlands and local Fante rulers who resisted Dutch control of forts acquired through an 1868 trade agreement with Britain. Although Dutch forces ultimately prevailed, the costly campaign shifted political opinion in the Netherlands toward selling rather than retaining its Gold Coast colony, and the expedition marked the effective end of Dutch involvement on the Gold Coast, which the Netherlands sold to Britain in 1872.
