The First Crusade (1096-1099) was the first of a series of religious wars, or Crusades, in which Western Christian armies led by nobles including Raymond of Saint-Gilles, Godfrey of Bouillon, Robert Curthose, Robert II of Flanders, Hugh the Great and Bohemond of Taranto, together with the People's Crusade and allied with the Byzantine Empire, fought the Seljuk Empire, the Sultanate of Rum, the Danishmendids and the Fatimid Caliphate for control of the Holy Land. The crusade ended in a Crusader victory.
