First Franco-Dahomean War

The First Franco-Dahomean War was fought in 1890, from February to October, between France, led by General Alfred-Amedee Dodds, and the Kingdom of Dahomey under King Behanzin. Fighting occurred as part of France's broader colonization efforts in West Africa, and with Porto-Novo allied to the French side, the war ended in a French victory that set the stage for France's later, more decisive Second Franco-Dahomean War against Dahomey.
