The Great Sioux War of 1876, also called the Black Hills War, was a series of battles and negotiations fought in 1876 and 1877 between an alliance of the Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne and the United States. It arose because the United States government wanted control of the Black Hills after gold was discovered there, and settlers pushed into land the Sioux and Cheyenne refused to give up. The war included many engagements, most famously the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where the Sioux and Cheyenne won a tactical victory over George Custer's forces, but the United States, allied with the Shoshone, Crow, Pawnee and Arikara, ultimately prevailed by using superior resources to destroy encampments, seize property and force surrenders. It ended in United States victory and the Agreement of 1877, which annexed Sioux lands and permanently established reservations.
