Hussite Wars

The Hussite Wars were fought from 1419 to 1434 in the Kingdom of Bohemia between the followers of the religious reformer Jan Hus, burned at the stake for heresy in 1415, and a series of crusades ordered by the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund and the Papacy to suppress them. Hussite forces, first under the one-eyed general Jan Zizka and later under Prokop the Great, developed distinctive war-wagon tactics known as the wagenburg, using fortified wagons mounted with early firearms and crossbows to repel much larger conventional armies, and they defeated five successive crusades sent against Bohemia. The wars ended not through outright conquest but through a split within the Hussite movement itself, resolved at the Battle of Lipany in 1434, where the more moderate Utraquist faction defeated the radical Taborites. The negotiated settlement known as the Compacts of Basel followed, granting Bohemia's Utraquists formal religious concessions and ending the crusading effort against them.
