Indo-Pakistani War of 1947

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, also called the First Kashmir War, was fought from 1947 to 1948 immediately after the partition of British India, triggered when the Hindu ruler of the Muslim-majority princely state of Jammu and Kashmir acceded to India after Pakistani-backed tribal militias invaded the state. Indian military forces intervened to defend the state on the strength of that accession, leading to fighting across the region for over a year. The war ended with a United Nations-brokered ceasefire in January 1949 that established a ceasefire line, later known as the Line of Control, dividing Kashmir between Indian and Pakistani administration without resolving the territory's disputed final political status.
