Komenda Wars

The Komenda Wars were a series of conflicts fought from 1694 to 1700 in the Eguafo Kingdom, in present-day Ghana, primarily between the Dutch West India Company and the English Royal African Company over trade rights. The Dutch sought to preserve their commercial monopoly by excluding English rivals, while the English aimed to restore a fort at Komenda, and the fighting drew in the Eguafo Kingdom itself along with rival Akan groups including Twifo, Denkyira, Akani, Adom, Fante, and Asebu, plus merchant forces under John Cabess. The war ended in an English victory, with Takyi Kuma installed as King of Eguafo by May 1700, giving England the advantage in trade along the Gold Coast.
