Mau Mau Uprising

The Mau Mau uprising, also called the Mau Mau rebellion or the Kenya Emergency, was an armed conflict fought from 1952 to 1960 in the British Colony of Kenya between the Kenya Land and Freedom Army and British colonial authorities. The Kenya Land and Freedom Army was made up mainly of Kikuyu, Meru and Embu fighters, with support from some Kamba and Maasai, and fought the British Army and the Kenya Regiment, which included European settlers and African loyalists. The capture of Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi on 21 October 1956 effectively ended the main British military campaign, though the rebellion persisted in smaller form until after Kenyan independence; suppressing it cost Britain fifty five million pounds and caused at least eleven thousand deaths among the Mau Mau and other forces, including 1,090 hangings, and it ended in British victory.
