The Ottoman-Habsburg wars were a series of conflicts fought from the 16th to the 18th centuries between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg monarchy of Austria, at times supported by the Kingdom of Hungary, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Holy Roman Empire and Habsburg Spain. Spanning from 1526 to 1791 and fought mainly across Hungary, Transylvania and the Balkans, the wars ended in a Habsburg victory that halted Ottoman expansion into central Europe, secured Habsburg control of the former Kingdom of Hungary by 1718 and helped establish Austria as a great power while Ottoman fortunes declined.
