Ottoman-Persian War (1505-1517)

The Ottoman-Persian War of 1505 to 1517 was a series of military conflicts fought between the Ottoman Empire and the Safavid dynasty of Iran during the reigns of the Ottoman sultans Bayezid II and Selim I. Sparked by sectarian rivalry between the Sunni Ottomans and the Shia Safavids and by territorial competition in Anatolia and Mesopotamia, the war culminated in the pivotal Battle of Chaldiran in 1514, an Ottoman victory that opened the way to the Ottoman conquest of Eastern Anatolia and northern Mesopotamia. The Ottomans, joined by regional allies including the Principality of Bitlis and the Emirate of Hasankeyf, prevailed over Safavid Iran and its Kurdish and Qizilbash supporters, ending the war with the Ottoman annexation of Eastern Anatolia and northern Iraq.
