Portuguese Conquest of the Gaza Empire

The Portuguese conquest of the Gaza Empire was fought in 1895 in what is now Mozambique, part of Portugal's wider Campaigns of Pacification and Occupation during the Scramble for Africa. Portuguese forces exploited the Gaza Empire's weakened state, worn down by epidemics, famine, and internal revolt, and the officer Mouzinho de Albuquerque distinguished himself by capturing the Gaza ruler, Gungunhana. The campaign ended in a Portuguese victory and the annexation of Gaza, opening what became known as the age of the centurions, a period of rapid Portuguese territorial annexation in the region that lasted until 1909.
