Second Anglo-Afghan War

The Second Anglo-Afghan War was fought from 1878 to 1880, arising from continued British anxiety over Russian influence at the Afghan court during the era of Anglo-Russian rivalry known as the Great Game. Britain invaded and forced a treaty granting it control over Afghan foreign policy, but after the British diplomatic mission in Kabul was massacred in 1879 fighting resumed, ending with a decisive British victory at the Battle of Kandahar in 1880 under General Frederick Roberts, following his famous forced march from Kabul. The war concluded with Britain installing Abdur Rahman Khan as emir, who accepted British control over Afghan foreign affairs in exchange for retaining internal autonomy, after which British occupying forces withdrew from the country.
