Third Anglo-Burmese War

Modern

The Third Anglo-Burmese War was the last of three nineteenth-century wars between Britain and Burma. The official fighting lasted only from 7 to 29 November 1885, though sporadic resistance continued into 1887 and anti-British uprisings went on for about another decade. It ended the independence of Burma under the Konbaung dynasty, whose rule had already shrunk to Upper Burma after the British annexed Lower Burma in 1853 following the Second Anglo-Burmese War. The British pushed up the Irrawaddy River on steamers under Major-General Harry Prendergast and removed King Thibaw Min. Burma then became a province of the British Raj, was governed as a separate colony from 1937, and became an independent republic in 1948.
