Third Anglo-Maratha War

The Third Anglo-Maratha War was fought from 1817 to 1818 between the British East India Company and the remaining Maratha chiefs, brought on by Peshwa Baji Rao II's attempt to reassert his authority against growing Company encroachment and by simultaneous Company operations against the Pindari raiders who operated across Maratha territory. Company forces defeated the Peshwa's army and those of his allies, including the Bhonsle Raja of Nagpur and Holkar of Indore, in a rapid series of engagements across central India. The war ended with Baji Rao II's surrender in 1818 and the formal abolition of the office of Peshwa, dissolving the Maratha Confederacy as an independent power and leaving the British East India Company in effective control of nearly all of the Indian subcontinent.
