Third Indochina War

Contemporary

The Third Indochina War was a set of linked conflicts among communist powers over influence in mainland Southeast Asia after the communist victories of 1975 in South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Khmer Rouge raids into Vietnamese territory led to the Cambodian-Vietnamese War, in which Vietnam overthrew the Pol Pot regime and then occupied Cambodia for over a decade. China, objecting to the invasion, launched a punitive campaign against northern Vietnam in February 1979, the Sino-Vietnamese War. Vietnam, backed by the Soviet Union, fought the remnant Khmer Rouge along the Thai border until the 1989 Paris Peace Conference and its full withdrawal. Regular troop engagements ended with the 1991 Paris Peace Accords, and a constitutional monarchy returned to Cambodia in 1993.
