War of the Golden Stool

The War of the Golden Stool, also called the Yaa Asantewaa War, was fought in 1900 as part of the series of conflicts between the United Kingdom and the Ashanti Empire. After the British occupied Ashanti territory in 1896, the Ashanti rose against British rule in 1900; British forces suppressed the uprising by capturing Kumasi and deporting the Ashanti leadership. The war ended in British victory, and the Ashanti territories became a British Crown Colony in 1902, though the Ashanti kept possession of the symbolic Golden Stool itself.
