Xhosa Wars

The Xhosa Wars were a series of nine wars fought from 1779 to 1879 between the Xhosa Kingdom and, on the other side, the British Empire and Trekboers of the Dutch colonial empire, in what is now the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Tension arose from rivalry among European factions in the Cape, friction between imperial and colonial administrations, and divisions within the Xhosa Kingdom itself, including rivalries between chiefs that Europeans frequently exploited; the frontier fighting drew heavy coverage in British newspapers and considerable public attention. The wars ended in British and Dutch victory and the territorial expansion of the Cape Colony.
