The .22 Short is a variety of .22 caliber rimfire ammunition, developed in 1857 for the first Smith and Wesson revolver and counted as the first American metallic cartridge. Its original loading used a 29 or 30 grain bullet with 4 grains of black powder, and the cartridge, originally called simply the .22 rimfire, took the name .22 Short once the .22 Long was introduced in 1871.
