The 2S3 Akatsiya, internally designated SO-152 and named for the acacia flower, is a Soviet 152.4 mm self-propelled gun developed from 1967 by Uraltransmash as a response to the American M109 howitzer, entering service in 1971. Its D-22 howitzer reaches a maximum range of 18.5 kilometers with conventional ammunition or 24 kilometers with rocket-assisted rounds, and the type remains in wide use with Russia, which holds more than 700 in service and about 1,000 in storage, along with Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and more than ten other nations.
