The 9K720 Iskander, known to NATO as the SS-26 Stone, is a family of Russian mobile short range ballistic missile systems developed from 1988 by the KBM design bureau in Kolomna to replace the older OTR-21 Tochka. It entered service in 2006, and its basic M model carries a range of roughly 400 to 500 kilometers with a choice of conventional, cluster, fuel air, penetrating or thermonuclear warheads. Russian forces and several allied armies have fielded it in the Russo-Georgian War of 2008, the Syrian Civil War, the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War of 2020 and the Russo-Ukrainian war beginning in 2022.
