The AGM-88 HARM, its name an acronym for High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile, is an American air-to-surface missile designed to home in on the electronic emissions of enemy surface-to-air radar systems, originally developed by Texas Instruments with later production by Raytheon and, for the newest variants, Northrop Grumman, and it entered operational service in 1985. Capable of exceeding twice the speed of sound and using passive radar homing that can continue tracking a target radar even after that radar shuts down, the missile carries a 150 pound blast-fragmentation warhead out to a range that varies from around 13 nautical miles in a low-level attack profile to as much as 80 nautical miles when launched in a standoff mode from high altitude. Intended to suppress and destroy enemy air defense radar with minimal input required from the launching pilot, the AGM-88 has been carried by multiple branches of the United States military and allied air forces and remains a primary Western tool for defeating enemy ground-based air defense networks.
