The Agni-V is an Indian nuclear-capable ballistic missile developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation and first flight-tested in April 2012, the longest-ranged member of India's Agni missile family, officially described as an intermediate-range system but assessed by many outside analysts as intercontinental in range given estimates of roughly 5,500 to 8,000 kilometers. Launched from a road-mobile transporter erector launcher and propelled by a three-stage solid rocket motor, the missile can carry a single large nuclear warhead or, in variants tested from 2024 onward, multiple independently targetable warheads, and it entered service with India's Strategic Forces Command. The Agni missile family takes its name from Agni, the Vedic god of fire, though the missile itself carries no religious significance beyond that naming choice.
