Akrafena

An afena, also called akrafena, is an Akan sword originally made for warfare but which also forms part of Akan heraldry. The foremost example is the Mponponsuo, meaning responsibility, which belonged to the Ashanti king Opoku Ware II and has survived to the present because it is still occasionally used in ceremonies such as the Akwasidae Festival. The expert use of the afena is also a martial art in its own right, combining bladework with knives, improvised weapons, street fighting, hand to hand combat, joint locks, grappling and weapon disarming techniques, and it is recognized as the national sport of the Ashanti Region.
