2S3 Akatsiya

Artillery And Mortars

The 2S3 Akatsiya, internally designated SO-152 and named for the acacia flower, is a Soviet 152.4 mm self-propelled gun developed from 1967 by Uraltransmash as a response to the American M109 howitzer, entering service in 1971. Its D-22 howitzer reaches a maximum range of 18.5 kilometers with conventional ammunition or 24 kilometers with rocket-assisted rounds, and the type remains in wide use with Russia, which holds more than 700 in service and about 1,000 in storage, along with Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and more than ten other nations. FAQs

Why were the first SO-152 prototypes not accepted by army inspectors?

Army inspectors rejected the 1969 vehicles over gas contamination in the fighting compartment during heavy firing; the fix allowed service entry in 1971.

Factory tests of the two Object 303 prototypes, which finished in October 1969, found strong gas contamination of the fighting compartment during intensive gunnery, especially when small charges were used. Because of this, army inspectors did not accept four SO-152s built in the summer of 1969 for ground tests. Once the gas contamination problem was solved, the vehicle entered Soviet Army service in 1971.
