The ASM-3 is a Japanese supersonic air-launched anti-ship missile developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the Japan Self-Defense Forces to replace the earlier ASM-1 and ASM-2. Its integral rocket ramjet, a solid booster that turns into a ramjet combustor once the missile reaches ramjet speed, lets it fly at about Mach 3 and then skim close to the sea in the final phase to reduce the chance of detection and interception. Guidance combines inertial and satellite navigation in mid-course with an active and passive radar seeker for the terminal phase, and the passive element is meant to keep tracking through jamming. Basic specifications list a length of 5.25 meters, a weight of 900 kilograms and a range of about 150 kilometers or more. It was designed to be carried by the Mitsubishi F-2 fighter and later adapted to other aircraft, and development was reported complete in fiscal 2017, with plans to extend its range to about 400 kilometers.
