Bambu runcing, meaning spiked bamboo, is a traditional Indonesian spear made from a length of sharpened bamboo about two meters long, with roots in Javanese martial tradition dating back to sparring contests held before the royal court of the Majapahit kingdom in the fifteenth century. During the Indonesian National Revolution against Dutch colonial rule, when firearms were scarce, Indonesian fighters took up the bambu runcing as a weapon of resistance, and it became a lasting national symbol of the courage and sacrifice of the independence struggle.
