Beretta 92

Small Arms And Sidearms

The Beretta 92 is a family of semi-automatic pistols designed and manufactured by the Italian firm Beretta, sold under the numbers 92, 96 and 98 depending on the cartridge. Carlo Beretta, Giuseppe Mazzetti and Vittorio Valle finished the design in 1975, and production began in 1976 with the first model, which was built until 1983 in roughly 52,000 examples of two slide styles. The short-recoil pistol was refined into a long line of variants: the 92S added a slide-mounted safety and decocking lever for Italian police and military buyers, the 92SB was shaped for United States Air Force trials, and the 92F was introduced in 1984 as a federal-trials model with fully interchangeable parts and a squared trigger guard. Later subvariants include the Vertec, the Compact and the M9A1, M9A3 and M9A4 military upgrades. The 92 series chambers 9x19mm Parabellum and .380 ACP, the 96 series .40 S&W, and the 98 series 9x21mm and 7.65mm Luger.
