The Boeing YAL-1 airborne laser testbed was a modified Boeing 747-400F fitted with a megawatt-class chemical oxygen iodine laser mounted inside the aircraft. It was built to evaluate the feasibility of destroying tactical ballistic missiles during their boost phase from the air, and the aircraft received the military designation YAL-1A from the Department of Defense in 2004. It first flew on July 18, 2002.
