Borei-Class Submarine

The Borei class is a series of Russian nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, with the lead vessel Yury Dolgorukiy commissioned on 29 December 2012 and the class entering full service in 2013 as the successor to Soviet-era ballistic missile submarine designs. Displacing up to 24,000 tonnes submerged and powered by a single pressurized water reactor, each boat carries sixteen RSM-56 Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missiles, each capable of carrying around six independently targetable nuclear warheads, alongside torpedo tubes for self-defense. Measuring 170 meters in length with a crew of about 107, the class incorporates improved noise-reduction technology intended to make it quieter than earlier Soviet designs, and as of the mid-2020s eight boats had been commissioned with further vessels under construction toward a planned total of fourteen.
