The Buk missile system is a family of self-propelled, medium-range surface-to-air missiles developed by the Soviet Union and continued by Russia, built to counter cruise missiles, smart bombs, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles. In the Russian layered air defense network, Buk sits below the longer-range S-300 and S-400 systems and above the short-range Tor and Pantsir systems.
