The T-84 is a Ukrainian main battle tank based on the Soviet T-80 family, specifically its diesel-engine T-80UD variant introduced in 1976. It was first built in 1994, and ten vehicles entered service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 1999 under the name BM Oplot; its high-performance opposed-piston engine gives it a power-to-weight ratio of about 26 horsepower per tonne, comparable to other modern main battle tanks. Why was the T-84 name not used when the tank entered Soviet service?
The Soviet Army opposed the T-84 name, so the tank entered Soviet service as the T-80UD.
The T-84 is a Ukrainian development of the diesel-engine T-80UD. In the Soviet Union the design bureau, KMDB, had originally envisioned calling the tank the T-84, but the Soviet Army opposed that plan because it would draw attention to the fact that the Soviets were operating four tanks (the T-64, T-72, T-80 and T-84) with more or less similar characteristics. The Central Committee sided with the Army, and the tank was adopted into service as the T-80UD. The T-84 name came into use later for the Ukrainian vehicle.
